When shifting from neutral to reverse (stopped) I get a less than smooth shift. There is a bit of gear nashing. It happens at idle and is worse as the rpm is raised.
All other gears are perfect and smooth and slip right in.
Is there something I am doing wrong? Or is there something to look for?

What tractor or vehicle? Some , like a 50 series IH tractor are synchronized in all forward gears
but not reverse.

There is a little drag somewhere in the bell housing area that is causing the engine to spin the input shaft on the transmission. Either the clutch plate isn't releasing completely or the pilot bearing in the flywheel is binding.

Really, nothing else could be the problem, unless the PTO is engaged and an elf is hanging off the back of the tractor and spinning the PTO while you try to shift into reverse... But, I think you'd notice that.

When in neutral I can hear gears turning under the shifter. it has been like that since I got the tractor.
I always thought there should be turning because the clutch is engaged so it made sense to me.

before I give the wrong idea...yes I am stepping on the clutch when shifting. I will listen next time to see if there is some drag when I step down.

If it grinds a couple gear teeth every time you shift from neutral to reverse and never when shifting
from neutral to forward, I'd slide the gearshift into a forward gear then quickly shift directly into
reverse.

So, it seems that if I wait 3 seconds or so after pressing the clutch pedal the gears stop moving and I can shift in to R with no sound. I didn't think there was that much spin down time. If you listen you still can hear the gears just after you press.---Thanks!
