966 engine help

The 966 got ran out of oil today due to a leaking drain plug. So now we are searching for our options.Engine was loosing power when shut off and took 2.5 gallons of oil to fill. So If we decide to install an entire engine would the 414T from a combine be a viable option? If so what would A 414T have for hp over the na 414. Is a 436T to much for the drive line to handle. are there any good short block recommendations? Thanks for any advice, well at least the good advice!!!

I was always told that the 966 transmission and final drive were not overbuilt. Which is to say run the current lineup of implements at the speeds you did previously with the old motor when the new motor goes in. Up here in the north they would stay cool if not more than 150 PTO HP but in an area where the temps run above 80 during the spring then all bets are off.

Yes it will work any dt414?466 will work but you have to change exhaust manfolds because exhaust elbow because tank and injucion pump flywheel oil pan and oil suck tube

It was very common to install turbos on 966's at least around here. They seemed to hold up just fine, just like the 806's and 856's that got turbos before.

Only thing about the combine engine is it will be governed differently. If you were to install the 966's injection pump and exhaust, it would have the same HP as original.

The big thing is that 9's have a 12 inch clutch and flywheel and the 10's and up run a 14 inch as for the trans and rear they will take what ya want , not a problem there with in limits .

Last fall we put a combine engine in a 1586. Had to change oil pan and suction tube, the manifold and turbo. We also changed the pump. It will run with the combine pump but it wont be right.Add ing a turbo to a 966 is just like the thousands of 806,856,986 thactore that aready have em. They will run for thousands or hours if you don't try to ge 200 horse out of it. Set it to about 125 and let it breath. As was said, pull the same implements as before, Only you can up it a gear and back off the throttle and save fuel. And,enjoy that glorious turbo scream! What did you say? LOL

I put a DT414 in my 966. It worked out real well. It made a more responsive tractor out of it. I had to use a fuel tank, breather and fan from a 1066. You can't use the stock fuel tank, because it is in the way of the turbo. I don't use it as if it was a 1066 either. I use the same equipment and pull it easier. If you use a combine engine you will have the other parts from your stock engine. I used a 915 engine. Even if you use a 436 from a combine it will be fine as long as you don't try to use it as it was a 1066 or 1466. I still have the 12 in. clutch in mine and haven't had any trouble.
