IH U2A Power Unit

HI all, this is my first post on this Website. I have a what appears to be an IH U2A according to the the tag on the bell housing which is hardly readable Model :U2A Serial: UAA29053SKL01A . The Block cast number is: 356318R2. The serial is :UAAM G, 30039. The year of the engine according to other resources is: 5-10-A, which would be May 10 1955. Everything I have found out about this engine is related to the C or Super C tractors but I'm not sure exactly what I have. It doesn't have a governor instead it has a block off plate, so I don't know how the carburetor is regulated. It has a starter, and a Prestolite distributor, not the IH model. From what I gather from the Power unit serial numbers where a little different from the Tractor serial numbers. What I'm trying to find out is what size engine I have and what was used to regulate the carburetor.

Thank You.

i cant tell you about the carb control because there are many governor controls that are belt driven, or electronic (retrofit) devices. The
engine CID should be cast into the side of the block near the oil filter, a C followed by 113, or 123, or 135. Depending on year these were
common sizes. Remember also that rebuilding can change original engine displacement. Jim

I think its a 113 engine but the one I seen had a higher rpm stock looking governor IF I remember correctly

Yours seems to be a C123 engine.

By "block of plate" you aren't, by chance, referring to the plate circled green in the photo below, are you?

If not, I would sure like to see a photo of yours!

(Photo is of a similar, but newer C135 bock (note "C135" is cat into the side). The block-off cover is over what would be the hydraulic pump mounting are (if so equipped).)

Here is a picture of the block off plate where the governor should be unlike other models.

You certainly have a C113/123 engine block without a Governor, there is also a plate over where a hydraulic pump would mount too. It looks like there may have been a generator, but that is missing too.

It's really hard to say what may have controlled the carburetor. What was this power unit used to power? Is there any kind of throttle control on it?

There's no linkages of any kind on the Zenith Carburetor. The fellow that had it was using it to power his well drilling rig. It hasn't run in over 8 years or more according to the last owner. It does turn over freely though and has been keeped inside an old shop. It going to need a little TLC to get running, but shouldn't take much.

I wonder if I can use a 12 volt coil on the distributor to see if it will fire up without hurting the points and condenser? Also I need to put an oil pressure gauge on it to see how healthy the pump is. I'm really having a hard time finding any info on the engines that didn't come with the governor,.

Oh, I did happen to find a service manual that YT covers the U-2A engine, hopefully I ordered the right one and it will have the details that covers this unit.

I'll give an update on the the progress of this engine. Maybe someone on here that has the same unit as this one and can give me some advise on the original setup of the carburetor linkages.

While I'm on the subject of this particular equipment, which tractors or IH engines run the same governor that would fit the C-113 or C-123 engines, and what would be the part number or cast number that I would be looking for?

Well, I finally got it running. No. 3 exhaust valve was stuck open and it took some tapping to get it to seat back. It runs fairly good and has over 40 psi of oil pressure at idle. After running awhile, the radiator starts to boil over. I think the Radiator needs to be cleaned due to sediment and trash plugging up the core. I'm really satisfied that it runs as good as it does for as old it is. I bought a good used governor that goes on a Farmall A tractor, so i'll have to figure out the length of linkage needed to hook up to the carburetor, and make a hand throttle coming from the governor.
