The original subject was "IH 354 Help".

Hey everybody - It's been a while since I've been on here, but I ran into a problem and need some help.

The battery on my tractor stopped charging sometime last year, so I figured it was probably just the old battery - Swapped it out for a new interstate one and replaced the
connectors as well because they looked rough. It worked great for about 3-4 cranks and then I was back in the same boat again.

So I took the generator off because I figured it was probably dead, hooked it up using some jumper cables, and it spins fine.

I put everything back together and left the hood off so I could make sure the generator was spinning and it is. The light on the dash with the lightening symbol on it
(which I was told should turn off to indicate that the battery is charging) cuts on when you crank it and then turns off after just a few seconds.

Could it be that the generator just isn't putting off enough power?

I'm still trying ti figure out why anybody is still messing with generators when an alternator is so cheap and trouble free. IMHO

I'm trying to remember here, but doesn't the 354 have a Lucas voltage regulator being a British tractor? What kind of voltage do you have at the battery when it's running? Since your generator will motor, that means it's good, so I'd start probing around the voltage regulator, see what you have going into and out of that. Maybe take the cover off and have a look-see, possibly try manually closing the points in there and see if it will charge. Phil is right though, an alternator is much simpler and more reliable

I thought about changing it over to an alternator, but I just like keeping it all original.

So a few days ago I was using the tractor to bush hog and the tractor cut off without any warning. I thought maybe the battery died, because when I tried to crank it nothing happened. I towed it back to the house and the battery was low so I charged it overnight, and it tested out good the next day. I tried to crank it and still nothing. No click or anything. The lights work, but it doesn't even try to turn over.
