656 Steering/oil cooler lines

I have an oil leak under the battery on my 656. It appears the leak is coming from fitting assembly p/n 404253R1. The fitting is like a "Y" configuration where one end has a tube pipe fitting that screws into the top of the transmission. The other ends of the "Y" fitting have hoses that attach. The fitting was loose in the transmission and of course, seized to the tubing. Will have to get a new one.

Question: Where the tube pipe fitting screws into the transmission, there is a hose that I can see still in the transmission. This hose would fit around the tubing. What is the deal with this hose in the transmission? Should I pull the hose out a bit to connect in on the end of the "y" fitting first? Is the hose just held on to the tubing by compression?

Sorry don't have a picture and I know this is confusing. Hope someone knows what I'm talking about and has been there, done that.

Thanks for your response.

There is supposed to be a hose clamp on there. I'm racking my brain here now trying to remember just how to that clamp down through hole in cover when attached to the fitting. I'm thinking the hose is supposed to be below oil level in transmission to draw oil up to power steering with a dead engine.

I do know I never cared for all those hoses and brackets when working in that area. Later tractors did cut the one support bracket in half and slot it so you didn't have to take so much apart to get where you are going. Not much help.

Pete, I note the hose clamp in the parts catalog. My 656 is a 1970 model which there was no hose clamp. I'm wondering if later models didn't use a hose clamp? I can't believe they would have allowed a hose clamp inside the transmission. Think it's possible early models used a hose clamp on the pipe outside the transmission and later models relied on just the compression of the hose around the pipe?

Just not sure but it seems I remember having to put the hose on with plate removed when working on a TA job for instance. I am going to look in my service manual and see if it shows anything which I seriously doubt. .

You're onto something. I went out to the shop this afternoon for another look at the hose stuck in the plate. Fooling with the hose, it dropped down and I heard a clink. Not what a straight rubber hose sound would make. It must have the clamp installed on the rubber hose on the back side of the plate as you are thinking. The plate I'm speaking of is approx. 3" X 8". Is it possible for me to just remove the plate and reach down in to get the hose and clamp? Will I have to drain any oil?
