Seal replacement on H question

I am going to tackle the job of dropping the belly pump on my H and replacing the seals that are badly leaking on my 47 H. I watched a video on you tube of a guy doing the same job on an M and he removed the clutch. Is this necessary? He may have been just replacing it while he had the pump out but he didn't say. I already have to remove a belly mower that is on the tractor and just don't want to take more stuff apart than is necessary. Any tricks or advice would be gladly welcome. Also if anyone knows the number for the seals that would be great. I am guessing that I can put 2 of the newer thinner seals in place of the old ones.Also I would like to weld up a tool to remove the dog and was wondering what thickness the slot is in it. Tractor never leaked but when it decided to it pours out now. Lol. Thank you Paul

If you have any luck at all you will just have to take the retainer off that holds the seal. Replace bottom seal also. I have taken a big punch/bar and got that coupler loose. Put tractor in gear and set the brakes first. Might want to put new seal in pump while you got it out.

Paul - I replaced both upper and lower seals on my Super H a few years ago. It is easily accomplished without disturbing the clutch. Most difficult part is lowering then reinstalling the belly pump. It is awkward and heavy - an assistant and a suitable hydraulic jack and blocks is highly recommended.

I got lucky and the belly pump drive dog on the countershaft came off easily. Simply grabbed it with a pipe wrench to get it started. Then it spun right off. However a scrap of bar stock set the slot then a good lick with a hammer may be needed to get it started (it's a standard RH thread....).

My notes show the seal numbers are 383159R91 (upper) and 71701C1 (lower). AFIK your H while use the same seals. I installed only one seal on each shaft, positioning each about mid-way in its retainer. Neither has yet leaked a drop!

I would certainly inspect the pump seal while it is out of the tractor. Fairly easy to do. Speedy sleeve is your friend. Ellis

I agree with Ellis, the shafts were worn on mine and needed speedy sleeves, new seals did no good.
