Farmall 300 hay cutter/conditioner

I have a worn out Farmall 300 row crop and a worn out New Holland 469??? cutter. I used the two today. The 300 seemed to do fine BUT it didn't want to lift the cutter bar. Why? I checked the hydraulic fluid and it was fine (& well above the add mark). Is the pump worn out??? What else could be the problem? thanks, kelly

Sounds like the hydraulic pump is weak and not building enough pressure. It could also be the relief sticking, but it is probably because the hydraulic pump is worn.

The pump most likely needs to be replaced but maybe a larger internal diameter cylinder if on hand may make a difference. Most common size was 3" bore but yours might be a smaller diameter cylinder. If on hand you could try a 3.5 or 4 inch diameter bore cylinder if you already have a 3 inch cylinder. Also, check on the tractor relief valve as the other poster suggested because if it is bothering the cylinder remedy won't matter.

Only way to know for sure what is going on is the do some trouble shooting. I would put a pressure gauge on it and see what type of pressure you have and then go form, there

The first thing I would do is try lifing a different machine . If nothing I have had recent problems with the hyd pump blowing hyd oil into engine. Another thing is are you using two hoses or 1? If it's a double acting cylinder with one hose there's no where for oil in return end to go.Another thing is try switching hoses around

Like jhncp said check to see if your set for single or double acting. Have you run this tractor with a double acting cylinder before?
There is a small lever on top of the control valves under the dash cowling that you switch to operate single or double acting cylinders.
