New Battery box

I hate to waste you'r time with this question, but I put a new battery box, in my 450, and it's got some punch out's, in the floor of the box, that are facing down, I flattened them out, what are they for??

I thought they were to keep the box off of direct contact with the platform so it would (in theory) rust less. Jim

Well that's a good theory, but the old one was was so packed full of dirt, i am think of filling this one with expandable foam insulation.

To my opinion, the holes are to prevent trapped moisture, trapped dripping battery acid, trapped rain. I'd just pinch them out, call it good, and NOT fill any spaces with foam insulation. Trap battery acid, trap water? Nope, not me.

there is 4 of those punch outs and quit sure its just for letting the dust and acid fall out. plus there is 4 mounting holes on the bottom and other holes so there should be lots of places for the dirt to get out. its like its a universal box as on my international 400 it has side mountings. with the top cover on pretty hard for it to fill with dirt also. you could cut and fit an old tube for the bottom as cant use anything too high then the top don't fit.

Well i appreciate you'r opinions, but the newer battery's don't slobber, like the older ones did,i put a 3/8 thick belting under the batter, i feel it absorb's some of the vibrations, but my old battery box was plumb full of caked dirt, just like a baked cake,on the bottom, and it was rusted, but not completely, so i think Jim theory is right on

Those boxes do rot out in time, this one lasted 60 years. Here is a few pictures of my 350 box that I replaced a few years ago.

when I put a battery in I put in a piece of rubber roofing in with the corners folded up to catch the acid, my tractors stay in side so there is no water to collect in the rubber. What little water may get in from washing just evaporates out.

Didn't think aftermarket was making original type boxes with a place for the battery hold down bolts in the bottom, but maybe you have one.

If the cut outs look like charlieu box picture they were for long carriage head bolts to slip into the slots and then go to a battery hold down that went around the outside top of the battery. If my memory is not failing me some only had one cut out at front and toward the rear in the box. then more for different type batteries. Thinking the 6 volt 50 series started out with two.

It is the same as charleyu picture, and the same as the one i took out, so you say there for hold down bolts, that's possible!

I have some wooden blocks to fit on the ends of battery to keep battery from moving forward or backward. I then put a tarp strap over the top of battery.

New batteries "don't slobber???" On what planet?

They still produce corrosive gas, and any enclosed metal box is going to cause condensation. Expanding foam is a great way to trap that all in and ensure you will need another new battery box in about 5 years...

The box on my Stage 2 Super H was that bad when I replaced it in 1981. And it was a low hour tractor.
Neighbor BTO bought it with his new corn planter in 1955. Bought a 300 to pull the planter in his hills
in '56 and the SH mostly sat.
