The crank shaft for the hand crank is frozen up. Any ideas on how to adjust the valves without being able to hand turn the crank in the engine. ALSO, I moved here 3yrs ago and cant find 1/2 my stuff, including my feeler guage. Is a dime too thick to use ad a gap set?

Yes. the magic number is .017" hot, so a soup can lid hammered over double would be pretty close.

Remove the sparkplugs (to make the engine easy to turn over), shift it into the highest gear, and it will be relatively easy (especially with the help of a buddy) to roll the tractor slowly forward to get the camshaft to the proper position for valve setting.

As to setting the gap, if this job is worth doing, it's worth doing RIGHT, a new feeler gauge set will only set you back $4 to $6.

With spark plugs out you can easily turn engine with a one hand on the blade and other hand pressing against fan belt.
