4th Gerar Stalls Farmall A

I posted on another subject the other day which gave rise to this one. It was about a governor spring. Gene thought that there was something wrong when I mentioned that I drive up the steep hills in 3rd gear and that in 4th it stalls. I just tried again after a year and it did stall again.
85 psi dry compression test all 4 cylinders. No feeling of loss of power with all other gears. Could it be I am runnning too lean? Thoughts. Thanks again Gene for making me realize there may be something wrong.

My BA will not pull the hill I have on my driveway in 4th gear. It runs well and does not lack power it is just that steep of a hill.

This is an exceptionally steep hill. It is about 25-30 degrees. In the winter front wheel drive cars cant get up if there is more than 1/2" of snow.

What I am saying is good chance your A cannot climb it due to the fact 4th gear is just to high a gear and nothing wrong with the tractor it self

A good running A should have no issue with a 10 degree slope in 4th. If the slope is greater, it might not make it. If not that steep, I would suggest using a timing light on it to see if the ignition is advancing correctly. Static (shut off) timing is TDC, and it probaby goes up beyond 30 degrees at full throttle. Jim

Timing is fine and it runs like a top. I always thought the same thing. 10 degree hills it is fine. Not this one or my driveway it too is 20 plus degrees.

I would like to replace the sleeves and rings but want to do the valves and guides and springs. I don't want to lay the tractor up. I am not going to be able to order in advance so I am going to have to take things apart and measure. All the parts places charge an arm and a leg for shipping and it comes via snails.

We have grades like that here in Iowa where I live and haven't found one yet that a B will not climb in 4th gear and yes some are long and I do know what 25 deg means

On flat ground you should be able to start off from a dead stop in 4th gear with about 3/4 throttle. You'll need to slip the clutch a little but shouldn't stall the engine. If you can do that I think your engine is ok.
