Hello, I am wanting to rebuild my great grandfathers 656 gas.
My first question is about how much does the c263 gas engine weigh? That way i am sure if my engine stand will hold it.
Also, does anyone have any tips, pictures or suggestions on splitting and rebuilding the engine.
And lastly (for right now) how hard is it to rebuild the T.A.? Would anyone have some pictures or tips on that also. Last time i drove it i went to back up in low and it went about 10 foot then stopped and you could hear it slipping. It did it in 1st gear pushing snow this winter. Hoping to get it ready to use to cut and bail hay next summer. Thanks in advance! Josh.
 
I did a 560 gas engine about 8-900 lbs. but a 2000lb stand the engine hangs over the front wheels making it unstable. I used my cherry picker to hold the outer end up. I bought a sleeve puller as the sleeves were pressed into the block. Be careful. I built splitting stands out of two trailer jacks that were square and used cribbing for the other part. You can buy a preassembled T/A unit which helps a lot but you still need to split twice, I am contemplating doing a 400 too. If you split you can pull it apart without removing the gas tank but if you are doing the T/A it will need to come off anyway.
 
I dont have any skin in the game,but charleysrepair.com makes some neat stuff for splitting tractors, and their reasonable !!!
 
Questions of "how hard" are going to depend on your wrenching experience, the tools you have available, and the space you have to work in.

If you're a professional tractor mechanic with your own shop and all the tools, just never worked on an IH, it's going to be easy-peasy.

If all you have is an adjustable wrench and a claw hammer for tools, and a shade tree in the back yard to work under, it's going to be the hardest thing you've ever tried to do.
