Jacking Up Farmall M Rear End

Getting Ready to do rear Axle Seals on my '52 Super M. What is the safest and easiest way to jack the Rear End Up? At my disposal I have a 20 Ton Bottle Jack, two Hi-lift "Handyman Jacks" and a 3.5 Ton automotive floor jack. Tractor will be on level concrete floor. If anyone has pictures of how they jacked up these tractors in the past and placed jack stands/cribbing under the Axle that would be much appreciated.

Thanks and Best Regards,

David

Here is a picture of the 4-way jack stand that I manufacture for safely repairing farm tractors. The jack stand uses a hyd bottle jack to lift the front axle, clutch housing, or rear axle of a tractor. Once lifted you install a pin in the hole so to hold the load just in case the jack settles. IMHO, I think my technique is the safest; use jacks, get her up in the air slightly, then install heavy 6x6 wood cribbing underneath, then sit her back down on the cribbing. You can work the wheels off confident that she'll not move then.

I think the other two replies you got are real good ideas. I can tell you the hi lift jacks can barely move a M if the tires are loaded - too much weigh for them. I've tried on mine so I know.

This kind of thinking/activity is what gives "Hi-Lift" style jacks a bad reputation. COMPLETELY THE WRONG TOOL FOR THE JOB!

"Hi-Lift jacks are dangerous and should be banned!" Yeah, because you tried to lift a TRACTOR with one, it understandably slipped out or failed somehow, and beaned you in the head. The jack is not at fault, you are!

If you don't have one of those fancy jack stands, a bottle jack and cribbing is the only way to go.

I built a couple of stands of varied heights with nothing more exotic than 2x6s and 3/4 plywood, construction adhesive and torx screws. Its nothing more than a small stud wall with the ply each side to keep it from racking. I think I used a 2x10 piece on the bottom to keep from sinking in. Bottle jack as a prime mover under other cribbing.

Just do one side at a time. As said jack it up then block or use jack stand for safety. Put it in gear with brakes locked and the other rear wheel will stabilize it from moving.

I gotta agree with the comments on banning "handy man" jacks.
They are SOOOOO dangerous. That's why I call them man killers or widow makers........Kenny
