farmall H / W4 pulley

has any one took off there belt pulley on a farmall H or mccormick W4 and put on a hydraulic pump ? was looking for pictures what others have done since im never going to use my belt pulley , might as well put a pump on there and use it for hydraulic power
 
I'm not aware of a hydralic pump set up for the belt pulley. Most guys just remove the pulley and cover the hole with a 'tin' cover.A piece of 14gage is pretty easy to cut and drill into a cover. You can fasten a pump to the tractor and chain or belt drive it from the pulley drive. I have done that to run a loader,instead of tieing uo the pto. However,if you want hydraulics,either use the belly pump,or install a live 'mag' pump.
 
i have a w4 , im only talking about removing the belt pulley , not from the chassis . i seen where guys modified a pump bolted up front to run off the crankshaft , but i dont want to do that, theres not a whole lot of mag pumps out there that would not have to be rebuilt or even finding one, if you take off just the pulley you might be able to run a log splitter type pump off of it and make a separate mounting plate for the pump , thats what i was asking if anybody has done something like that
 
Still wont be "live" like a distributor pump or front mounted, but its been done. In fact, there was a post a year or two ago on
here with someone buying a 4 with a setup like that.
 
thats ok that it wont be live, i'll just move the lever for the pulley pto to turn it on then operate the levers for the work
 
Create templates to make an adjustable mount that place the pump under the fuel tank and aligned
with the pulley flange. Buy gilmer (toothed) belt drive and driven sprockets and a belt that
matches of correct length. Pay attention to RPM so the pump you purchase can run at an optimin speed
for the volume/pressure you intend. I also agree that if your W4 is mid to late 1950, it will mount
a Distributor (live) pump. However the timing gear should be changed to a stronger gear from a SH,
300, 250. Jim
 
Yes,you can remove the pully itself and put on a sprocket,or a V-belt pully instaed. As I said below,I did that once. Hung a PTO pump underneath and chain drove it from the belt pulley drive. It worked very well. Only 'drawback' was it tended to be noisy and required some 'maintenance' from time to time.I could still use the PTO if needed for other jobs
 
i was thinking of mounting the pump on a homemade bracket in line with the pulley flange , so all i have to do is bolt the pump flange to the pulley flange and eliminate the chains, and other belts and pulleys , just have to find a pump that uses 1019 rpm , thats the rpm for the belt pulley , should not be to hard to find a pump
 
No reason at all that you can't play with the size of the drive and driven pulleys and make the pump run
whatever RPM it's rated for, every hyd pump spec sheet has psi, gpm, and maximum rpm on it. The driven
pulley will run 1019 rpm at 1650 rpm, but W-4 engine can run up to 1800-1900 rpm no load, which would be
1100 to 1200 rpm roughly on the belt pulley output.

Spent a LOT of time on H's and M's with transmission driven belly pumps, did same jobs with tractors with
live pumps, amazing how much faster something like clearing a plug on a sickle bar mower is with live
hydraulic compared to transmission driven belly pump.
 
i think i'll start gathering pieces to start my project , i think a 2-3 gallon hydraulic tank should be sufficient, what do you think?
 
There is a setup that hooks to the pto or belt pulley not sure what kind it is.

i am pretty sure joel showed a picture of a char lynn power pack. i have one on the pto of my w-9 for two way hydraulics. here is a couple pics of my m.
it has a 260 amp dcwelder that drives off the belt pulley. the tractor has an m+w 9 speed, so i can engage the 9 speed and double the belt speed. kind
of hardto see the welder, if you want some close ups let me know i am out of town but will be back in a week
