1965 gas. 656. The pto is clearly hydro engaged. Put a sagnaw 3 point on it. When bush hogging, if burry the blades in ground accidentally the pto clutch will slip. Raise hog with 3 point and pto starts to grab and back to normal. 3 point raises fast so don t think week hydro pressure. This normal for pto clutch to slip? Thanks.

PTo has it's own pump . So if it has slipped then it is time for new clutches and plates and a pressure check . It would be wise to do a complete rebuild on the unit at this time . IF you don't know what your doing then let someone that knows how do it.

Check your linkages my was doing same thing, pulled it out put new clutches in---same problem it turned out the over center linkages were worn out

The 656 is a self contained hydraulically actuated PTO, not over center like a 460/560.

On the larger tractors the spool can be adjusted for more clutch pressure, and I think the 656 is the same. You need a 300PSI gauge and the right fitting for the test port. Correct pressure is in the service manual.

The spool is the part that sticks out the top of the unit and connects to your PTO lever up behind the seat.

You may luck out and the adjustment has rattled out and your pressure is low, but running it low has not done your clutches any good. How long you have before you need that rebuild depends on how long it's been slipping.

I meant the linkage go up to a certain point then if it falls back(the linkage) over center point the pressure will fall back off. We found this out simple by putting gauge on unit I activated the lever my friend
watched the pressure rise to normal then fall back off once handle reach full travel. with handle at full travel and pressure down my friend put a prybar on linkage on top of unit gave it a tug and pressure jumped back
up to normal. So having just replaced the clutches and that was not the problem, obviously the linkages were the problem. Replaced all worn linkage parts and have been using it on a 7 foot tiller all spring. So the
moral of my story is look for the easiest thing first.

Got a book ordered and will check pressure once get and go from there. Thanks for the info. Keep ya posted on findings
