I need some advice on my International Cub Lo Boy. I’m having a hard time getting it to start. I have put a PerTronix electronic ignition on it, I had it start and die with me once. Now the starter will not even turn the engine over, so I had the starter rebuilt. Still the same thing. It seems to me like the bending gear is not engaging the ring gear. I have a new coil on it, new spark plugs, fresh gas and new spark plug wires. The spark plugs are gapped at thirty thousands. PerTronix says to go seven thousand above the normal gap. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated Thank you

also pull the plugs if the fuel wasnt turned off the engine may be hydrolicly locked by fuel in the cylinders

An engine won't start if it won't crank over no matter what kind of ignition system it has on it. Address the starter issue first.

So, what makes you think the bendix is not engaging the engine?
When you hit the starter button, what, EXACTLY, happens?

A click, or nothing means you have a problem with one or more of the heavy wire connections between the battery and the starter and the tractor frame. Get a battery post cleaning too (about $2 at Walmart or any auto parts store), a wire brush, and some 240 grit sandpaper or a file. Follow the heavy wires from the battery to the tractor frame and starter, taking EVERY connection apart and thoroughly cleaning it.

In the meantime charge the battery for at least 24 hours on a 10 Amp setting.

I bought a pertronix kit for my 184 Cub and could never get it to work, even after calling the company. You may need to put the points back in as a trouble shooting move. However since your tractor started and died quickly and your starter isn't working right I would start with what they have in common which would be the battery and connections. I had a problem on my 184 with the starter not working, acted like a safety switch wasn't working. I found out it was bad connection at the battery. Previous owner had put on the replaceable battery terminals connectors and they had come loose and corroded where they make contact with the battery cable. Having a volt meter would be handy. It could be you simply have a bad battery.

Any chance the battery is weak and not providing much spark to the coil? Or maybe the timing is advanced too much?
