Boreing- The tractor vet and others

I had a guy bore a ruined H block for me and he went through the wall at about 3 7/8". He did some measuring and thought 300 and 350 blocks were a little thicker in the walls. We bored a 300 block to 3 7/8s and hard filled the block almost to the top, ran 3 7/8s pistons and never had a problem. Years past I know the SH had to be bored to whatever the OD of the 3 5/8s Fire Craters sized at to accommodate them. Someone here will know what that is. gm

Core placement in IH engines was pretty good, not perfect. Thus the intention was to make a support and coolant heat transfer thickness for the sleeve. It is difficult without special lab equipment and expense, to determine the existing thickness at any point around 4 cylinders. Finding water is good when drilling wells. One way to do it is to bore them out to a size that causes most of them to go through the wall, then sleeve the block and bore the sleeve to your intended size. Good luck, and remember the goal of having fun. Jim

One nevber really knows for sure , sonic testing helps some I did one H that we went to the 806 gas pistons and went the max of .060 over bore and got away with it , will this happen every time ?? don't know . We have bored into the water jackets and custom sleeved them and got away with it for the sake of winning that prized trophy and bragging wrights at the coffee shops . We have installed Cummins 855 sleeves , Mack 673 sleeves , used Allison pistons . GMC pistons . Farmall rods in a MM . Welded sleeves in . There has been a lot of Hold my beer and watch this . The object of this game is to build one to WORK and not make lots of spare pieces and parts . Ya need a Machinist that is a crazy as you are and not afraid of getting into the water jacket then finding a sleeve that will work. When one starts down the dark path one needs a bottomless piggy bank and the will to go where no man has gone before.

If going to bore and use sleeves, bore to SH sleeve OD close to 3-11/16 and use 3-9/16 SH piston and sleeve set. Some early H blocks can have more problems bored. Some bore to 300 and 350 block size about 3-3/4 and get away with it.
