what will cause a ballast resistor to get really hot? had to rewire a cub today cause of a rat. Cubbie started up ran a little than died. would not start. check for spark.... no spark..so I started checking backwards. when I got to the ballast resistor it was really hot. I replaced it and she started up again. the resistor that got really hot was new.

any comments or ideas????

Oh, I got a cub yesterday to go with the heard.

It's normal to for a ballast resistor to get hot while in operation - hot enough for it to smoke if there is any trace of oil on it.

But make sure the resistor mounting bracket is solidly bolted to a metal surface like the distributor drive housing or a section of sheet metal (but NOT the fuel tank!) to help dissipate the heat.

If you were mucking around "troubleshooting" the stalled engine with the ignition switch "ON" and it stopped with the points closed, current was flowing in the primary kgntion circuit and the ballast resistor was doing what resistors do... converting current into heat!

I will add that it could be that the new (first) hot resistor is good. It could be that the points decided to be reluctant to pass current for a
bit. New points usually have a film on them that needs to be cleaned when installed. Test the resistor before chucking it out. Jim

Yes indeed Jim! Also.....a new, out of the box resistor will often smoke the first several minutes it is energized as residual oil from the manufacturing process is vaporized/burned off.
