18 volt overcharge

I started a topic about my battery boiling over. So I did bring a volt meter with me and it is throwing out 18 volts with a little engine speed. I did check the volts at the coil with the key turned on (not running) and it read 12 volts. That is where the voltage reg wire ties in and runs up to the hitachi altenator. The guy I bought it from is sending a new altenator incase the internal voltage regulator is bad. Is there something else that could be messing it up while running. The battery doesn't spark when I hook it up, so I don't think there is any strange draw.

sensing voltage should come from the far end of the alternator output wire (maybe the amp meter, or starter relay/switch) Even connecting to the output stud on the alternator is better. The sense source should be away from accessories or ignition. Jim

The easiest and lowest voltage it can sense is right at the alternator output stud. Just a short 6" wire. Jim

I mean to say positioning it on that stud will cause the sensing of voltage that results in lower voltage at the battery. Jim

Well I am supposed to have the new altenator today. Probably wont get to test it till tomorrow night. Hopefully that fixes it.
