If not, what is it? Looks like part of an H behind the FEL arm.

Seller said was running when parked about 2 years back. I get to go out and put in a batt, and a bit of oil, gas and see if it will fire.

Presuming it is a 6V, unless converted. I'll check the coil, or if it has magneto, just use a 12V batt to crank.
 
Easy way to tell an H apart from an M is the angle of exposed steering shaft from steering wheel to hood. The H
shaft angles downward at a lot greater angle. The M shaft angles some but is alot more flater. If you get this
detail down, you can tell the difference 150 yards away on tractors that don't have any decals.
 
Well, I went and messed with it. The engine is locked up tight. Won't turn with starter, but the bendix will engage, and won't turn with a pipe wrench on the crank start shaft in front.

I might be interested if the engine would move. He says it was running ok when parked. Well, I've heard that before. The clutch works, brakes are there, and the loader isn't too bad, but with the engine stuck, no way I'm messing with it.
 
We got the engine moving. It wasn't as tight as I thought. The seller says it's converted to 12V, and all I had was a 6V batt with me. When he hooked up a 12V it cranked over ok.

I'm going back up this week to check it out. Thought of offering $800. Rear tires are not very good. I found a wide front not far from me for $400. Tires are $225 each.

If it all is sorted out, I will have about $1700 in it with good tires, wide front, working FEL.

It's for use at a small runway, will be moving dirt, mowing, and towing planes around a bit.

Even though he says it was converted to 12V, that really never involves changing the starter, it is still just a 6V starter.
Usually changing to 12v includes putting in a 12V battery, swapping to positive ground and slapping a $30 alternator on it.

A good 6V battery should have still spun the engine over if the wires to the starter were good and of original gauge.

I would be concerned with the cylinders being pitting or the rings shot after it has been siezed. Factor the cost of a rebuild into the price for a worst case scenario and make sure it is still what you are willing to spend. I know that many people have broke them free and ran them after being siezed, but if they were siezed for very long, they will consume oil and have lower compression at best.

I purchased a "running" (after a couple of hours at the sellers place fixing his repairs) H with a loader for $800, and ended up spending a lot more on it to get it into the condition that I am satisfied with. It had a stuck valve and a "rebuilt carb" that was missing all the internals (the previous owner rebuilt it and didn't know what he was doing). I still ended up rebuilding the engine because it had a mix-match of pistons in it and wouldn't run as smooth as I wanted. I also ended up completely redoing the head because the valves, guides and seats were totally shot.

I have way too much in this old tractor now, but I can walk out and hit the switch and it starts within a 1/4 of a rotation and runs smoother than a new car.
 
Good info, very sensible. Rather than invest in this, with marginal utility, I might just go for the Ford 3000 I've always wanted. If I have to get involved inside the engine, and other stuff, life is a bit too short to sort through an H with issues.

I have a borescope, and I'm going to look in the jugs and see what I see. If it has pitting, I'm outta there. Not interested in a rebuild of engine.
