Difference in hi capcity and regular hydraulic filter

Just got an international 460 with loader and backhoe. Checked the hytran and there is water in it. Wanted to change the filter and refill, but not sure of which filter. By serial number it says is a 1961 diesel, has letters s and v after that which I looked up, and says torque amplifier and 17 gpm pump, but not sure as engine has been changed to gas, no torque amplifier, so other stuff might not be right. Figured I would pull off filter cover, and just match dimensions with a new filter, and no filter in there at all!!! So, can I measure open area, or use the cover to identify which filter I need, and with nothing in the filter cavity, am I going to need more parts besides just a filter and gasket?

Not sure if there is any difference in capacity. a couple different filter setups were used over time. When I got my 560 an old time parts guy for IH said the best one wto use was the oval screen type, according to parts list number is 388084R93. with that you need the screen and valve 386121R92. Valve isn't shown in parts diagram. It goes in the outside center of the filter and is supposed to be like a relief so if filter gets plugged oil is sucked through fine screen. The cover puts some spring pressure on screen and valve to hold it in.

That is the filter number that I found also, but it says "not for high capacity pump". From research, I find that maybe a high capacity filter is deeper than the 12 gpm one, maybe with a cover that is a little deeper that allows for the 17gpm filter? (Not the longer round one made aftermarket I see mentioned.) So who knows what the difference is between the 12gpm filter and the 17gpm filter? My manual states pumps are interchangeable, with only a couple of different sized gears inside, but no where can I find what the filter difference is. Just want to be sure it will fit my tractor, which seems to be made up of a couple different tractors, and with no old filter for reference, how can I be sure to get the right one?

Think I figured out the answer, using NAPA filter cross reference, it appears the 17gpm high capacity filter is about 3.5 inches deep, the regular filter is about 2.5 inches deep. The thicker filter needs a different cover that sticks out just about that extra inch for the big filter. As I understand it, several models of IH tractors had this extended cover. No old tractor boneyards around here, but if someone has an old tractor with the deeper hydraulic filter cover, I would interested in buying it. If I have the 17gpm pump, my guess is the narrower filter is too restrictive for the volume, and would impair performance. I'm also guessing a lot of guys, especially those that have replaced their pumps, are using the 12gpm filter with a 17gpm pump and are doing okay, so don't know how much real difference it would make. Still, if someone has the deeper cover out there...?..

You'll want to run the 17 filter if that's what you have. You're idea of upgrading to it with the bigger cover would be good too. I've ran my 460 for a few years now and it does get a noise to it even when everything is good. Okay so it's a 60 year old machine, but all the more reason to not give it extra reasons to make noise.
