Proper Oil for Hydraulics - 48 Super A

Tomorrow my hydraulic gasket set is coming and I ll be installing it first thing. I m hoping this solves my mixing of oil problem.

I plan on dumping the engine oil and leaving the drain plug out over night and seeing if the hydraulic gasket replacements keep the hydraulic fluid in the pump over night and not in my engine oil. With that being said, what is recommended for hydraulic fluid? I ve been told 10W-30, SAE-30.

The oil should be Hytran, or equal. (not 303 fluid) The seal will not leak much, or at all when not
running. The hydraulic pressure in the pump when using the hydraulics, is what forces oil into the
engine through that shaft seal. Jim

can use pretty much any oil u put in there. engine oil or standard hyd. oil.those little pumps don't matter. unless your going to be sharing hyd's with another larger tractor which is unlikely. in that case u want hytran.

Any ideas on what a good test for checking a leak from the hydraulic fluid into the engine oil then? I d hate to have to do multiple oil changes if it doesn t work.

Would it not be cheaper to start with the engine oil in the hydraulics? Then if it is not leaking drain and replace with Hytran then or fix if it does leak. This way the oil would not be a problem in the engine and tractor could be fixed and tested

I think I m going to dump my 10w-30 and put SAE 30 in the motor and hydraulic now... so if it does mix it s not the end of the world

(quoted from post at 04:18:30 05/10/19) My 47 B has had nothing but hytran used in it from the day we put pump on tractor in
the late 50s.

Seems like a lot of people mispeak on this, but Hy-Tran was not even a thing until 1963. You may have been using Touch-Control fluid in the late 50's.
