544 keeps getting stuck in gear

I have a 544 with the shifter in the dash and its stuck in reverse. It was stuck in a forward gear last fall and we pulled the top off the transmission and reinstalled it. Went fine for a while. Seems to be some slop at the dash, but not sure if this is the issue. Any ideas on what could be the problem?

My guess is that you have a worn shift linkage component. On my 400, I removed the shift lever and re built the end that mates with the shift rails. That would be the part that I would look at first.

Unless damage has occured trying to get it out of gear, no need to pull top cover. It is possible to
get at the shift linkage under the hood but difficult. Easiest is to remove battery and get hold of
the rods that go down to pivot lever. Determine which one is out of sync with other two and align
them.

No doubt you have worn and loose linkage, but , with proper adjustment of the TA to clutch linkage,
it should come out of gear easily and I would bet that is what is causing your problem.

Careful movement of the shift lever so it is truly completely out of gear before moving shift lever
cross ways for next gear will save you a whole lot of grief.

You have wear that needs to be addressed.1/16" wear in each pivot point adds up to a lot of slop.As was said, proper TA adjustment makes a huge difference in shifting.Other problems may exist as well.

Try moving the shifter lever through all the gears. Make sure you shift in a H pattern and not round of the corners like a N pattern. I have a 664 with the same shifter system and this works well for me.
