Still won't charge....LOST

54SuperC

Bought my first tractor. It is a 1954 Super C. Was setting in a field for 20 years before I bought it. Engine was seized. Did a full engine overhaul, hydraulic overhaul, and charging system was fully replaced. Tractor runs great now. But still will not charge. Generator, voltage regulator, ammeter, and wiring were all replaced. It is positive ground. I polarized the generator and no charge when running. Checked with multimeter.

Thanks to Caterpillar guy, heres the link to make it easier. Its a step by step procedure to determine the cause of non charging. Both the genny and VR need a good ground to operate

I take it you have left it 6 volts like it was when built??? One quick and simple thing you can do to see if it will charge is run a
"dedicated ground" wire directly from the voltage regulator base-plate to the ground terminal at the battery. If that causes the generator
to charge your issue is trying to ground the regulator through the various chassis components. The voltage regulator must have a very good
and continuous ground for the charging system to function. Both of my 6 volt Farmalls (Super C and 240) have a dedicated ground wire and I
don't have any charging issues with my made in the USA regulators.
John T's check list will probably expose your issue as well but just mentioned this as a quick and easy trouble shoot at your problem, Hal.

Guessing you got ground or regulator problems. Guessing by your post, I presume you got all your wiring right and
everything installed correctly. Just one more thought, it doesn't take nothing to fry a regulator. Starting a
tractor and letting it run a bit before polarizing is about all it takes to fry one.

All systems in the charging circuit need to be grounded. Use an OHM Meter one lead to batt ground and other on to each component rite down to the lite sw
