48 Super A Oil Filter Leaking

Waiting on my hydraulic pump gasket set and my oil filter decided to start leaking and oil pressure dropped from about 1/2 on the gauge down to a 1/4. The oil is pooling slowly out of the bottom of the oil filter. I m ordering a new filter as we speak: is this a gasket issue or something more? And if it is a o-ring issue, does it come with the ones from this website s shop?

You maybe got 1 or more rubber ring's in there, and the older they are the harder they get, and then they do leak !!

"Fast" has got it covered, you need to get a sharp small screwdriver or a pick and dig ALL of the old gasket(s) out of the groove in the block.

The groove is deeper than you realize, and, likely there's one or even two old hard brittle gaskets packed down in there.

As to the lowered oil pressure, some oil "pooling" by the bottom of the filter doesn't explain that.

It would take a pretty serious leak, such as a quart or two a minute to affect oil pressure noticeably, IMHO.

This is where I m at right now, I m trying to figure out this oil filter apparatus. I m not sure if the internal disc (one pictured with two holes) is able to come out or not. It doesn t seem to move.

I put a new gasket on the top. Yet it looks like there s another gasket below this one but I can t get access to it. As you can see in the photo, (I highlighted it) I can t get the gasket to sit flush in that area. I m kinda stumped.

Having an issue getting it out. Recommendations on stuff to spray on it to remove it?

Just keep picking away until it is all gone. I had to do that the first time I changed oil and filter on my 1950 H. Previous owner apparently thought it was not necessary to replace that gasket. It came out in tiny little crumbs. I now change that gasket every time.

Over-tightening can also cause leaks. It is possible to distort the TOP of the canister to the point that a new top gasket will have very little effect.

Good to know, I ll just put it snug when I get this gasket out. I m wondering why all of a sudden it started leaking, haven t had an issue for a whole week since I got it.

I m gonna be buying an Awl, picks and a tiny screwdriver to get this son of a gun out. Pretty frustrating. I ve got a lot of wood I need to haul this weekend so I m in a rush to get it done!

An old, worn out screwdriver can be sharpened to a point as can a rusty bolt, etc., etc.

(quoted from post at 19:37:27 05/09/19) This is a valid point, but my bench grinder has seen better days !

Once you finally get a sharp tool under that brittle old gasket and pop it out you'll laugh over how simple it was!
