Farmall B Head Gasket

Well I finally got the head redone and am ready to put it back together. My question is do I apply any type of gasket sealer to the head gasket and for that matter to the valve cover gasket??? Got the gasket set from here head gasket is metal with like some type of coating or paper. Valve cover gasket is cork. Also I believe valve adjustment settings are for a warm motor so how do I set them then when I am just putting it back together???

Thanks J.P.

I don't put anything on the head gasket (no glue, no sealant). I might smear a thin coat of grease on the top of
block. Not always, and really for no reason. I don't use any sealer on the valve cover gasket either. If I glue
it, I glue it to the valve cover only, not the head. That way the gasket lifts off with the cover if you take it
apart.

Once head is installed, adjust the valves. Make sure each valve is closed when you adjust it. These will need to
be re-checked after it's started and ran to operating temperature. If you adjust em correctly in the beginning,
you will only have to make some really minor adjustments if any at all. You might want to just leave the hood and
ect. off untill after this is accomplished.

when both surfaces are a fresh machine job sealer is not required. many head gaskets have the sealer built into them when engine gets hot it seals. I use Permatex high tack spray for all gaskets. holds them in place and easy to remove. lots use copper coat on head gaskets. valve adjustment is for hot engine. add .002 for the cold setting. start and run for at least an hr. or 5 hrs. ideally is to operating temperature even with rad covered. or work it. then retorque head and reset the valves to spec. start with #1 cyl. on compression at TDC and follow the firing order setting them. when the running mate #4 valves are rocking that's how you tell #1 is on compression. or feel for it at plug hole.

I used aluminum paint on the head gasket when I built the engine for my BA but I also used a used head gasket and I have had no problem in the many years I have used it. On other engines I have done I used copper coat on any head gasket I put in.

valves on ih are adjusted get number one piston on compression adjust rocker 1 2 3 5 turn engine one revloisn adjust rocker 4 6 7 8. any temp abouve 32 is warm.

32 is a cold setting. most manuals say hot, meaning the engine is run then shut down and torqued. things get hot they grow and clearance is decreased so when the book says hot better be hot.
