Loader/power steering on a 424 -advice?

Greetings,

I have a 424 with regular steering. I am thinking about putting a NI 501 loader on it. I think power steering would be good to have. Would a hydraulic in-line torque generator (Berlin or m&w) on the steering shaft give adequate performance? I would likely us a hydraulic pump on pto to run loader.

It'll help in your search to know that neither Berlin or M&W made power steering. You're looking for Behlen and Char-Lynn. Char-Lynn (now Eaton) torque generators can be purchased new still.

I think a Behlen would be too bulky to fit anywhere on a 424. Stock power steering on a 424 appears to be fully hydrostatic, no mechanical connection.

People used to make those conversions on tractors, combines, etc.
You'd probably be happier with a bigger tractor under a loader.
You'd probably be even happier with a tractor that came with power steering and a loader already installed.

Hi, used a IH 434(very similar to 424) with IH 1501 loader for many years without power steering. Did everything on a small dairy farm with the 434 and 1501 loader back in the late 1960s to early 1980s when it was traded for IH 384 with PS and IH 1550 loader.
Trick is to only try to steer the tractor when it is moving. PS is very niece to turn front wheels when tractor is stopped and to manipulate in small spaces.
