I just bought a 68 model 656 gas with working t/a, i've never owned one and i hope this is a good purchase, i don't farm just do a little bush hogging so i hope to get a little encouragement on here, thanks again

I have that tractor. I don't do much field work with it, but it does fine with my IH #80 snowblower (full front weight set).
And most importantly it always starts right up easily, even at 20 below.

Move the TA stick into TA and out of TA briskly. (about as fast as you can) slow Mo lever action will kill it. Use it often as needed. Not using it is worse than using it. Jim

Yep,shift it fast. Like you slammed your hand in the car door fast.Never use it as a 'jake brake'.That's what throttle and brakes are for. That mechanical TA will not hold you back on a hill. leave in direct. Since you are a 'newby',order an owners manual, and service manual.BinderBooks is the best place for books. Also Ebay and your IH dealer. The 656,666,686 tractors are good, handy 'little' tractors. No complaints from me.

We had the Diesel version of that tractor and it was my favorite to operate. Smooth as silk and it carried enough width with the plow or cultivator unit to turn on the end. Understand that the old Super C's and Fordson units would beat you to death, they were not very ergonomic.
