Need Correct Length of Plug Wires

Does anyone know the correct lengths of the spark plug wires on a Farmall 140? Should be the same on an A , B, C , Super A, 100, etc. I don t have any wires and need to make some.

I don't believe there is a correct length it is just what one cuts them to that works. Most plug wire sets I buy you cut them and hen put on the needs so it s not a set length for the wires

I understand but since I m having a shop professionally cut and crimp them for me at no extra charge of the wire I need the lengths.

Can't you take the old ones in to use for patterns?

I don t have any

Would the shop let you take a roll of
wire home? Then you could cut your wires
to length then go back to the shop and
have them put the ends on.

I just bought universal ones and will cut myself. I d rather them professionally install ends and stuff since I had problems with mine the last time I made some. Not used to making my own.

take the wire and fit in in distributor starting with #1 then follow wire to plug and cut it where it looks nice and neet. then continue with the next on which is #3 and follow it along #1 wire to the plug, cut to length. do 4 and 2 the same way and you have a nice factory looking wire set. take and get them crimped if you don't have crimps. I buy plug wire by the roll and the ends. make all mine.

Napa sells Sparex made up wire sets. hey have for IH and other tractors. I have them
on my IH 450 and WD45.

I know where you're coming from on the ends. We bought one of those cut and install the ends type sets, and we could NOT get the ends to poke into the wires. Oh just poke them in there, says the instructions... Nothing doing... The copper points would just bend over no matter how you tried to poke them in.

Tractor Supply sells premade sets for 4-cylinder Farmalls. They're slightly long for a C113/123 but don't look bad.

Are you cutting them to length and having the shop you bought them from crimp the ends?

I use ACCEL 8 mm solid copper wires on my Farmall's and Cub Cadets. I cut the center wire long by 1/2"
to 3/4", twist it, then fold back outside the silicon jacket and solder to the crimp-on end.

Not trying to confuse things but this talk of correct plug wire lengths reminded me of a discussion on a motorcycle forum.

There was at least one guy there who tried to argue that on a two cylinder engine the plug wires should be the same length. He was convinced that if one was shorter than the other one it would cause a problem with timing as the spark would be delayed due to the longer distance it had to travel! While it may be true in a very exact way the difference in time for the spark to travel 3 or 4 inches further being electricity basically travels at 186,000 miles per second would be near impossible to measure!

As for deciding the length of the wires I might take something like a piece of rubber fuel line hold one end at the plug and the other end at the cap and adjust length so it looks nice. Not sure why anyone has that much trouble making up the universal wire kits, never had a problem with the ones I have used for over 50 years!
