selecting a regulator

F 20 with a magneto
In the pile of parts for this tractor I had a four terminal regulator and I did not get it to work, after I installed and wired it.
Does a tractor with a magneto take a different regulator that if you have a distributor?
After looking at a wiring diagram on line, I think I have the wrong regulator.

A magneto is self-powered and has no bearing WHATEVER on the charging system

The regulator (or cutout) that ks appropriate for you charging system is dependent upon whatever specific generator is installed.

Where or how can I find information on how to match a regulator to a generator?
I bought a 6 volt positive ground regulator for this F 20. It has three side terminals (L,BAT, F) and a terminal on its underside, which I believe is a ground terminal. The generator on the tractor is a Delco Remy.

Assuming the reg is the correct one for the generator, you've got it wired wrong.

The terminal under the reg base is the GEN terminal. It should connect to the the generator "A" post.

The BAT goes to the ammeter; the F to the generator F; and L to the light switch (if you have lights - otherwise no connection is made to L).

Be sure the reg base is SOLIDLY grounded, then polarize the gen (momentarily jumper the BAT and F terminals)

After looking at the diagram that I have copied, I see exactly what you have explained. If this is a good regulator, I should be able to get it to work.

Yes indeed Jim.....jumper the BAT and ARM terminals to polarize.

Thanks for the catch!
