Super C head studs

I re-assembled my Super C cylinder head and after starting the engine it started leaking oil between cylinders 2 and 3, I let it warm up a bit and then retorqued the head to 80 ft. lbs. I started it and it was still leaking.. I believe the head needs to be resurfaced (Which I should have done in the first place). My question is can I replace the studs with regular grade 8 bolts? The fine threads on the top of the stud are in poor condition..possibly I'm not getting a good torque.

Head surfaeing should have been done. At least check for flatness. Check the deck as well.I see no issues with grade 8 bolts.Maybe just replace all studs with new. Or use all grade 8 bolts. Mix/match would not be good

yooper,

I prefer studs, using them prevents stripping threads in the block. Also, the friction of one nut/washer is different than a bolt which has the friction of the head as well as the threads turning iinto the block.

Of course, I am mostly stating opinion and not scientific fact.

Sounds like head needs to come back off. It's possible you put on a damaged gasket, or you damaged it through installation. If you know what your looking for, you can inspect that yourself. While it's back off, check for head and block for trueness. And also for damage, no gouge marks where the leak is.

I would not use bolts. I would continue to use studs. Get new ones if you have to. If you suspect this to be the problem, I would replace them with new ones to begin with. See if that fixes it before you tear into it any further. Basicly saving you from having to take the head itself back off.

Studs are expensive...20 bucks a piece. I looked at a IH parts diagram and it showed the studs and nuts but it also showed bolts and washers..I'm confused...did IH use both? Every Super C I've looked at had studs with nuts.

Agree about the studs. Before I installed them I'd run a file across the block, especially where the leak was, and see if maybe the surface wasn't pulled up slightly at the rims of the holes. THAT is correctable with an abrasive ball or cone and hand drill. I'm not recommending that you DO that rather than getting it planed, but I would. gm

did you put a sealant on the gasket? also, did you run the taps onto and back off of the studs, prior to installation? a bit of rusty bolt thread will cause the torque to be off

No sealant on gasket...aftermarket gasket from NAPA.pulled the head again, sent it out today to engine shop, also got all studs out. Just gonna bite the bullet and replace studs and nuts.also ordered an original head gasket.
