finding out my tractor IH666

While waiting for my filters to arrive in the mail, I am doing things that can be done beforehand and learning where and what everything is, and how they work, and what the specifics and problems are with this tractor.
I thought I could loosen the fuel filters so they are ready to easily come off when the new filters get here, so I went to shut off the fuel. I look at it and it's just a very short, chewed up piece of metal sticking out under the nut. Guess the little metal T-handle was broken off. Okay, need to replace that, but got it turned and shut off for now (Ihope!). We'll see if a cup of fuel comes out when I actually take off the filters, or 30 gallons comes out. I also turned the fuel drain handle, and there is a long tube that goes down looks like to conveniently catch the fuel, but nothing came out. I had to totally take off the handle and put a tiny 2 tablespoon measure under that and took an hour or two to run clean fuel out of there drip by drip. First tablespoon or two were dirty. Looks good now.
I read about how to vent the fuel system after changing the filters. Sounded easy when reading the manual and looking at the diagram in the house. went outside to see it all in person and... TA-DA!... there is NO air vent on the primary filter as explained and shown in the manual!!! It's not that it's broken off or something, like the shut off handle was, but there it was obviously never there. Now I'm worried about all the air not getting out when I need to do that. It explained it such that the primary vent de-aired the space between it and the the tank going to the right, and the vent on the secondary filter spot de-airs from that filter and down to the left to the fuel injector area. So is just this one air valve going to de-air going both ways through both filters? Many times the manual doesn't match the tractor or is missing info. I was reading how to tighten the belt and the manual says "if the belt is loose, tighten as follows:", and then I turn the page, and it is a totally new subject heading, electrical system, nothing more said about how to tighten the belt!
Then I thought I would drain and change the hydraulic fluid and filter (that's the only filter I have right now, was available locally) and the one drain plug had a shallow indented square for a hold to unscrew it. Eek! I don't have a square tool like that! I improvised and got it off there and drained that part and went to the other plug: that one was a chewed up unrecognizable piece that stuck out instead of in. I tried forever doing different things to get that off and couldn't get it. I guess I don't have a pair of visegrips, so will buy one today and grip it tight with that and tap with hammer. Neandrathal style, right? It's already been ruined. So I need a new one of those, too. Having a very hard time looking up parts and finding schematics of systems on the ihcase site. So, the hydo filter and screen was VERY black and dirty and full of big particles. Filter was glued onto the block and had to get a sharp utility knife to scrape it off.
Well, this is long enough, just had to share a little of my tractor fun. It is fun!

The one bleeder screw will be fine. Fuel flows downhill. That whole "left shark, right shark" stuff you quoted from the manual is BS.

What manual are you referring to anyway? I&T?

What issues are you having with finding parts on the CaseIH website? You want to go under "find parts by model" and type in your tractor's model. From there select the listing for the 666 TRACTOR, and you will have access to all the parts diagrams.

Remember that they are just PARTS DIAGRAMS, not assembly drawings or instructions on how to put the tractor together. They can help, but they came from paper books and microfiche, and you can only have so many parts on the page before it becomes too confusing.

good, one air vent is ok, good.
I'll try to attch a pic of the manual I have. And the example of the belt adjustment on one page, then a totally different topic on the next!
The problem I have on the caseih parts site, is I go to hydraulic section, for example, and then there are lots and lots of subsections and I can't find and don't know which subsection has what I'm looking for. I just don't know enough yet to make things go easy.
I can't get pictures on here, computer problems. but the book is old and a red cover and says IH on top left corner with a picture of a 666 tractor.

Yep, I agree those CaseIH online parts diagram are very confusing. I blame it somewhat on being
based on military naming convention, like....wrench, adjustable, 8 inch. It also seems there is no
set standard to name things like the different groups. One model may have the ring and pinion in the
..drivetrain.. section another model it may be found under ..chassis.. To many cooks in the kitchen
I think.

You are on your own getting that drain plug out of the transmission. Every one has their own way. Some use the torch and I was always real leary of doing that.

The small drain line under the fuel tank is actually a WATER trap drain. Bottom of tank has a little bubble so supposedly water will collect there and you drain it (daily haa haa) when using tractor. They get plugged with dirt.

On bleeding the filters, IH quit the bleeder screw. Might have one on final filter. Anyway, the priming pump will take about 300 strokes (counted them many times) depending on how good the pump is and how large of a filter. Do not try to start the engine until you know you have fuel going through the pump and back to tank. If you try to start it partially bled, it may very well start, pump a shot of air into injection lines and then you will be fighting it.

They are actually very easy to bleed and start right up, just takes time and lots of pumping. Do not fill filters with fuel to try to save pumping. That is a no no.

The drain plugs can be changed to pipe style with a square place for a wrench that a lot of people use vise grips or even pipe wrenches on(probably why it is unrecognizable). Buy a selection from a hard ware store 3/8, 1/2 and possible 3/4 . It should be standard pipe thread. I dropped mine in the pail with the oil so I bought new instead of fishing it back out.

4 out of the 6 red filters I ordered arrived today! Put in the air filter, the old one was very dirty, and cleaned out that rubber piece under it. Carefully and slowly took off the 2 fuel filters. I didn't trust that the broken shut off valve actually shut off the line and was worried the whole tank was going to try to drain. Nope, just maybe 6 cups came out, including what was in the filters. So that went good! Put on the new filters and turned on the line and opened the air vent and started pumping. At first it felt like nothing was happening and I was wondering if the pump was working. Finally I could feel pressure and hear fuel moving around. Funny someone mentioned 300 pumps because I started counting for some reason and it was a few hundred! So when it came squirting out the secondary vent, I kept going, I don't know, maybe 30 pumps more. Hope that's enough. Do you think about thirty pumps past it coming pouring out of there is enough? I don't like not being able to check if something was done right or not. Don't like guessing. Those shiny red filters look so nice on the pretty red tractor :D Took out the battery and want to check it and clean it and I need a new negative cable and need to cut and reclamp the positive if it'll still be long enough by then. Waiting on the 2 oil filters. Got a vise grip and will try getting off that last plug tomorrow. Bought the oil and hydro fluid today. And, yes, I definitely am planning on replacing those drain plugs with a more normal style.

Sounds like you have an I&T manual or other cheap
reproduction you will eventually find the information
Is usually there but it?s hard to find . You can usually
find an oem manual on eBay for a pretty good price
sometimes even less than the i&t

No, I don't have an I&T manual. I have an original IH, very old, beat up, used one. Still all there and readable.

I can't get that middle hydro plug out even with vise grips. Trying the rear one which is above the tow bar so I got that out of the way. I see this rear plug is the indented 1/2" square like the most forward one, but this one is flush with the frame, so no gripping the threads on the outside to get it off there. Can't wait to replace these silly plugs. If I can ever get these two off. At least I have some good music to listen to while I get nowhere on the tractor.

ok, got the most rear plug out. That one is lower then the middle one, so I'm not worried about not being able to get out that one. I didn't want to do this, but the torque wrench has a perfect size 1/2" square on the end, so I used it and it worked and didn't get wrecked. Now, onto the battery while that drains thoroughly and I think I'll run to town and see if I can get replacement plugs. Haha, I'm doing a play-by-play, aren't I? It's just all new and pretty fun for me. I tell my horses what I got done and they really don't understand.
