Voltage regulator

I get mine from Car Quest have the # of the generator so they can get the correct one. You can also ground your field terminal and that will make the gen charge and if that doesent make the gen charge the gen is bad and no problem with cut-out.

I'm with Teddy on this one. Typically a TWO TERMINAL black box "device" mounted right on the Generator or perhaps behind/under the dash or near the Generator is a CUTOUT RELAY with BAT and GEN/ARM terminals. A full fledged Voltage Regulator is typically a 3 terminal device (BAT FLD GEN/ARM) or a 4 terminal (BAT FLD GEN/ARM LOAD)

If you only have a two terminal Cutout Relay its "possible" to convert to a full fledged Voltage Regulator but that's NOT for rookies. On the two terminal cutout relay system the gennys FLD post wired up to a LHBD (Low/High manual charge control) Light Switch but using a Voltage Regulator it would wire instead to the FLD post on the VR. HOWEVER you need the correct Genny and VR match to work properly. There's also the 2 or 3 brush genny system to be concerned with if converting.

Basically BAT on VR or Cutout Relay wires to ammeter (same as before),,,,,,,,,,ARM on Genny wires to GEN/ARM on VR or Cutout Relay (same as before) HOWEVER FLD post on Genny now wires to FLD terminal on VR NOT up to Light Switch.

BUT you need correct VR and grounds and a VR that matches to the genny to do it correctly (still may work ???) It also makes a difference if the genny is a 2 or 3 brush and if its a three brush adjustable where to adjust it

Id consider a matching genny and VR and be done with it versus converting
