beginning to upgrade tractor. what color should i use on farmall h rim ?

what would you recommend for me to do inside, for rust and such.?

Over the years, IH sponsored many programs for repainting the Farmall letter series tractors. The rims always got painted with common, ordinary aluminum paint. Usually done with a brush.

You might be able to find somewhere close by to galvanize them. I have no idea what it costs but I have seen places that do it.

Up til about 1943 rubber tyred rims were red (see 1936 paint committee decision) tractor was all red including the wheels. Advertising in the early 1940s shows only red wheels. They were later galvanized. The first Farmall H had 36 inch two or three piece (depending on whether Goodyear or Firestone) rims. They then went to 38 inch drop-centre rims. My 1941 W-4 has no trace of galvanizing (front or back) just paint.

I painted a 1951 Super AV (I know, not an H). The local IH dealer had a paint labeled as "Aluminum" for use on front and rear rims. Not bad price and went on well.

you need to remove tires and sandblast the rims. then I prime the inside and mount the tires. they were galvanized back then but now u can paint them the galvanized color.

I'm pretty sure forum member DR. EVIL has at one time or another has stated that the rims were NEVER galvanized, only painted. He worked at the Farmall plant, ensuring an adequate supply of rims to meet production needs, among other things.

must have been one hell of a tough paint then, any original rims that I have or seen is galvanized. sure don't look like paint. wonder what models he is talking about.

I agree. I've repainted several rims. Not a trace of galvanizing on any of them. Just the remains of aluminum paint.
