rebuilding a carb

just rebuilt the carb on my 460. found a really good video on rebuilding a 460 carb and followed it.

got the carb rebuilt, installed and the tractor started up. Now she idles good and runs without the choke having to be pulled out.

question: how do you know when the idle needle and main jet needle are set right. I followed the instruction on installing them: in then back out 1 turn on idle and out 3 turns on main jet.

what now do I need to be looking or listing for?

comments are welcome!

your in the ball park. adjust idle mixture for the most rpm. I find even 3/4 turn out is good. get the engine idle down to 400 rpm to prevent run on when shut off. depends how heavy you are working the tractor determines the main jet setting. heavier pulling may need 4 to turns out. idling around doing nothing 2 1/2 turns out is good. plus read your spark plugs and see what they are telling you. should be a tan color working under load if they are black lean her out a bit. don't want too lean either. PLUS... the dwell and timing has to be set to factory specification before any carb adjustment, as it will change carb setting. plus , when advancing to wide open throttle it should rev up without stubbling or hesitation.

Pretty much what rustred says...

With the engine FULLY warmed up, adjust the idle mixture for the highest/smoothest idle. Then reset idle speed screw to give about 400 - 450 RPM.

Now with the engine running at slow idle, snap the throttle wide open. The engine should pick up smoothly.

If it stumbles, turn the high speed mixture OUT a half turn at a time until it accelerates without stumbling.

However if you see black in the exhaust as it accelerates, turn the high speed screw IN a half turn at a time until the exhaust is nearly clear.

Once you get the mixture screws set - and if you will be working the tractor hard - open the high speed screw an extra 1/4 turn or so to get the most power.
