Cost of rebuilding Super A head

So I took the head from the Super A in to be rebuilt. New valves where needed, new valve guides, test spring strength and plane the head. It?s $525. That seemed high to me but not everyone here in Olympia wants to work on old tractors.
How does that price compare to your area?

Just had a Farmall H head completely redone with new valves, guides, seats ground, umbrella seals, planed for $325 in NEIL.

That's about what I paid for an A head a few years ago here in western NY. Labor rates around here are probably higher than some other places.

I have a machinist engine rebuilder that lives about 2 miles from me. He will charge anywhere from $75 to $125 for one. Too bad you can’t ship a head cheap

Probably about right, things are high priced. A year ago a guy offered me $275 for a Farmall M head, needed every thing, guides, springs, seats and valves but wasn't cracked. Said he couldn't find one any where. He bought it but I didn't have any idea it was worth that much.

its a small 4 cyl. head so my thinking its "enough" I been paying roughly 500.00 for the 6 cyl. 282 heads to have redone.

If they don't have much market for old tractors but they have a good steady customer base for newer more expensive stuff that's part of it. You're paying the same techs who can do pretty high end stuff for their time to relearn the basics with an old job. Same reason it costs so much to get wipers changed at the car dealership... Techs aren't just sitting around waiting for work in a well managed facility. They have high dollar jobs lined up and fit you in for your convenience, not your savings.
