Starter switch sticks on 49 farmall cub

I put a new starter switch on my 49 cub still 6volt and it hangs. When I pull the rod to start the tractor the starter keeps spinning and then the starter starts to smoke. I have to pull the battery cable to stop it.

Sounds like a switch from the land of NEVER right. If you got it at TSC take it back then go to a auto parts store or tractor dealer and get a good one

Are you sure the sw is sticking or the pull rod is hanging up and not returning back. Just unhook the rod and pull the lever to see if the sw pops back up as the pull rod can hang up

How are you getting it unstuck?

Unfortunately, the advice to take it back and get a "better" one is a waste of time. They're all made in the same factory, on the same assembly line, whether you get a cheap one off ebay, or pay the long buck for the one in the fancy NAPA box. Same exact switch, Made in China.

When you go to install make sure the nub on the starter is clean and smooth as you can get it. Make sure the switch operates smoothly before you install it. Make sure the rod doesn't bind. Pull the rod like you mean it. Don't "limp wrist" it because that causes arcing, and arcing can cause the contacts to weld together.

I like the word remove the rod and work the leaver by itself. Even take the unit off the starter, work it by itself. If binding take apart, file, smothe down, etc, to make the lever operate smoothly. Personally, I eliminated the manuel starter switch, installed a brass bolt instead of the striker pad, hooked up a solenoid, and installed a key. This makes a safety setup so no one can accidentally start the tractor.
