disc brakes

Last production regular H tractors had the "new" disk brakes. All super H tractors had them, both stage 1 and 2. Osco Lambert made a similar after market disk brake to retrofit Farmall H tractors up to that transition. There were both H and super-H tractors produced in 53. 390500 was the last H. 501 the first SH. Jim

Think the first official production was in 1-53. First SH built in Feb. was serial # 1022 and 2468 was also built in 2-53.

Jim, Take another look at the Serial Number table along the left margin for the Farmall H as s/n 390500 is actually the first one built in year 1953. I have an original 1952 Farmall H, with known history from original delivery, with a few cast codes as late as Dec. 1952 being s/n 389543 which is listed as being produced in Dec. 1952. According to Guy Fay's IH Tractor Data Book, the last H was produced in early 1953 with the s/n of 391730. Nothing on my Dec. 1952 H like the disc brakes and other Super H features are on my tractor which would have been approximately 2187 tractors from the end of Farmall H production.
Just trying to provide accurate information from other additional accepted sources as to what I found through Guy Fay's IH Data Book, Hal.

We have a couple of late production H's that have disc brakes like the Supers, 391474 is the serial number of one of them - I can't remember the other but it's within 50 of the one I do remember. All of the Super H's had disc brakes.

Our 53 H has band brakes. Was bought new by grandpa so know the history of tractor. So I don't know if there were many to much later than ours.

Good info Hal, adding first H with disk brakes was 391358 and also 53 calendar year H tractors with band brakes and disc brakes.

There were four "distinct" H-series tractors produced in 1953:

1. The "classic" H with slow gearing and band brakes.
2. The "almost super" H with faster gearing and disc brakes.
3. The "Stage I" Super H with C164 engine.
4. The "Stage II" Super H with live hydraulics and battery under the seat.

Anybody own all four?

I don't quite understand your stage 2 & 3 Super H's. ALL Super H's had the fast 4th, disk brakes and C-
164 engine. I think you might be confusing the Super H with the Super M, which did have 4 stages if you
count the 400 as a stage.
Your stage 4, also commonly referred to as a Stage 2 by most also had the quick-attach front bolster like
the 300/350 with the larger holes in the grill for attaching the cultivator stay rods. And I've seen all
combinations of those features on tractors. 30 years ago I took a day off work to go to a farm auction
that had 5-6 Super H's on the sale bill. Some early, some stage 2. One had quick attach bolster and a
grill with the space for the two large holes but the holes weren't punched. I've seen a couple grills
like that.

I really like my stage 2 Super H. Dad traded a '39 H for it almost 51 years ago, May 8th, 1968. It's been
my Go To tractor ever since.

Jim - The after-market disk brake maker was AUSCO-LAMBERT. Osco is the name of a drug store chain and the name of a small town in NW Illinois I grew up 5 miles from. 100 people, church, elementary school, fire station, 3 feed mills, 3 trucking companies, bank, tavern, restaurant, lumber yard, general store/meat market/butcher shop, and a general automotive repair shop that worked on cars and trucks from pickups to semi-tractor, tractors, combines, anything with an engine, and also reconditioned water well drill bits, one of two places in the US that did that. Also same family made fireworks in a special shop just outside of town in a special compound they had to build, was called Osco Fireworks, now called Nostalgia Fireworks.

Nobody will own a H with disc brakes and faster gearing from factory regular production models. Unless it was the faster 4th option for a H. H gear speeds were still used.
