450 Gas, what size disk harrow can she pull?

I have my dad's old drag type disk, but its badly worn, disks are paper thin, and its a pain to move from field to field. We pulled it with a JD A with no problems.

I'm looking at a JD RWA 12', the owner said my 450 should handle it with ease.

What's the Max size disk/harrow my 450 can pull without pulling her guts out? I guess it may come down to getting it thru my gates, so 12' may be all I can handle.

Wanted other's opinion.

Thanks

I would say a 14,foot a 47 or 470 IHC Disk, and a harrow behind that, should work, that's what i pull with the M's and super MTA.

Nothing against JD discs, but I wouldn't have one
on the place. The neighbor had a JD & you could see
ridges all summer long---never could get the ridges
worked out.

We pulled a #37 disc with our 450D----14 footer &
it never had any trouble. When you left the field,
it was flat--level.

12 ft. Maybe 14 in places, but duals would probably be needed. If gates ae an issue, stay with 12.another fact, better to have an implement 'too small' than to have one too big. You can always gear up and throttle down if needed.12 ft will be fine,I'll bet you're not farming a lot of acres either. If it were me,12 is as big as I'd want.

And i have 10 John Deere, 100# front suit case weight's on the back of the disk, after the wheat was off i would go thru the slough's or low area and disk it up!

JD letter series discs are terrible They leave ridges all year and tow like crap swinging back and fourth across the road. You need an 7 or 8 ft IH # 37

Sure you can pull a 14 inch disk on rock hard ground but if plowed you?ll have it raised up barely touching

The 7 or 8 footer is all it can handle

As a kid I disked literally thousands of acres with a Super M pulling a 12' Oliver disk. Made the tractor snort, but it got the job done.

As others mention you will likely have the best results with duals (we did).

If your goal is to replace the fluid weight with cast iron, you will need more cast iron,I have 6 set's on my tractors after i took the fluid out!

makes a big difference on what gear you plan on pulling in. either 2nd or 3rd. plus plowed ground will pull twice as hard as stubble field. you didn't give any info on your field work plans. it basically a 10-12 ft disc tractor. go on stubble field and you will pull 16 ft!.

I have about 20 acres of sandy loam that hasn't seen a plow in 25 years. We used to row-crop it. I was thinking about running the disk over it to cut the weeds, then plow it with 4 bottom moldboard, then disk it and drag it down. Gonna dryland row crop a bit see how it does.

I would just plow it, forget the discing. it will just make for harder plowing and poorer job. if weeds are that tall cut them down with mower or swather. if you will be using a 12 ft. disc you probably need it lifted a bit, nothing saying you have to be buried to the spools. then harrow it down.

When i had my 450 D i pulled a 13,6 370 with 20 inch blades with no problem , but when i went with duals it pulled a lot easier and a gear higher . Pulled the same disc with my S/MTA in third.

WOW! I wonder how much actual seat time some of you guys actually have that are making comments! A 450
gas only pulling a 7-8 ft disk and having to shallow it up in plowed ground? We're discussing a 450, Not
an H! Dad pulled a 12 ft 4 inch Kewanee disk with 20 inch ripple blades, we used M&W direct axle duals
any time we drove on plowed/tilled ground. I could run 3rd gear even up some fairly steep hills, with the
disk as deep as it would go in plowed ground. In old corn ground disking ahead of plowing I could run in
4th gear in our more level fields, depending on temperature the engine would warm up pulling that hard,
then I'd drop back into 3rd.

I wouldn't go over 14 ft. And ANYTHING other than a Deere disk. Something around 12 ft would be perfect.
Dad bought a Super M-TA about 1960, got carried away and bought a 14 ft Krause disk, just a bit too much
disk, not enough tractor, the M&W duals were bought to try to pull that disk better. The SM-TA did much
better than the JD R diesel did pulling that disk. Creep along in 3rd gear almost a mile per hour slower
than the SM-TA.
