Farmall 706 Gas Starter

Working on a Farmall 706 Gas, The starter I removed was a 9 Tooth 10mt, I purchased a 656 Gas Hydro starter 30mt and is 10 tooth, do I need to change the starter drive or will the 10 tooth be ok?

I would say you probably need to change the drive to work. Before that I would measure the gear diameter if same then would probably try it first. If it works it would be a wee bit faster turning over.

Forgot to say by removing the solenoid you could try the starter engagement by hand to not damage the gears on the starter or the flywheel. you might have to have somebody turn engine slightly to be sure of the engagement or not.

IH changed starters. One use 9 tooth and other used 10 tooth. Either starter works BUT you have to have correct starter because the nose cone was changed and not the number of teeth on flywheel ring gear. Some noisy starters out there when you get the wrong combination, but some of them do work depending on which way the mistake is made.

Similar situation on 656 also as I have had to run out and put correct drive in starter. Serial number of tractor means nothing if starter has been repaired or switched.

I want the 30mt 656 hydro starter in this 706, this is a repower project with a 4-53 Detroit diesel in it using the 706 flywheel, hopefully the 9 or 10 will work being this was a 656 starter then
