guys been a few weeks I was gone most of one week but back on the project. ordered rebuild kit should be here end of the week. some things I found as diesel tech brought up taping the holes for the head bolts and most of them were packed so they have been bottom taped and cleaned. another thing I found was the tappets 5 out of the 12 were pitted on the surface that rides in the cam, cam looks good so I ordered 12 new ones. one question I have as I took the per combustion cups out on the head as I cleaned it before sending it out. but the question I have and I did not find it in the book unless I have not looked at the right place yet, the cups have a detangle hole and 5 of them were at the 6 o'clock position and the one for number 5 was at a 4 o'clock position. does that cause problems if they turn ? I am unsure how big of deal that would be, there were some metal gaskets in there is this something that can be shimmed to hold pressure on them from the injector body? feed back welcome, thanks.

The pre cups MUST be installed correctly, look on the outer edge for "UP", it MUST be at the top when it's dropped in the head on the first gasket. They don't ever turn when running as the injector keeps them clamped in place. If you see any that are turned with injectors out, it was not in right before.

I can't imagine going through all the work and expense you are, then reusing the cam with new tappets.

All it takes is a little wear to the cam and the tappets won't rotate as they should, and wear and fail.

I will add that if they are not installed correctly all it causes is hard starting. plus make sure u use new gaskets each time. and make sure the old ones are removed. they are not shims. here is where I like to torque them. you have them leaking compression and it carbons them out and makes removing them difficult. make sure you have the top o ring dust seal installed also.

If new lifters do not have drain holes, I would drill them or you may very well get oil coming out of the crankcase breather tube. As for cam shaft, I would measure the lift and if OK I would not worry about putting new lifters on old cam. Those cams don't give problems. Nothing like the 400 series engines.
