41H oil filter question

My 41H is s/n "84898." This puts it before the date when IH supposedly changed the filter size from "tall" to short. However, pulling the filter on my H reveals a cartridge filter that is about 5 3/8 overall length. This makes it strongly resemble the WIX 51172 ("short") instead of the WIX 51125 ("tall").

Could the early H's be reto-fitted to take the shorter filter? Or do I possibly have a non-original engine (it has "K" casting codes, however--indicating a 41)?

The filter I took out says "made in India" "P35032" and "H03Y16B1" if I am reading the numbers correctly. The internet shows no matches I can find.

My plan is to install a WIX 51172, but want to know I'm doing the right thing. Thanks in advance for any insight.

Pretty sure the housings can be switched. Somebody more knowledgable can tell you if the engine has been changed. I don't see any harm in using the smaller filter even under heavy work load.

Have you tried to see if the "tall" filter will fit your "cover"?

If it won't, the complete engine or just the cover MAY have been swapped out at some time.

Over 75 years and likely multiple owners, "stuff" can happen.

The smaller'/shorter filter is actually better. because it' has less oil to pump to fill the canister, to get full oil pressure to the crank. When u first start the the motor is when the majority of wear occurs!

The shorter filter may be better but you still need the end contact to keep it from pushing up out of the base or you might just as well not have a filter.

Match size of the housing. Look at pictures on line of H farmalls to check the difference. Pretty obvious. The filter is a bypass type that controls flow with an orifice, and drains into the block. Oil pressure should not be affected. Be sure to dig the original Oring out of the base, it will be hard as metal and need a sharp puncture wound punch ot awl to get it out. Jim

The lubrication system on a Farmall H tractor is not a full flow filtration system like on todays engines. On the older Farmalls oil is pumped directly to the main oil gallery. Once the gallery and the drillings to the bearings are full of oil a small amount (about 10%) flows through a small orifice as it enters the oil filter. Once the oil is filtered it's just dumped back to the oil pan.

Thanks, I don't have a "tall" filter to test fit. However, I took a picture of my filter cover and found this on the web. From these, I am guessing I have the short filter.

The top of my filter is about even with the top of the mag, while the one in the old photo is clearly taller than the mag.
My apologies for the bad light in the photo. I had a flashlight in one hand and the camera in the other.
picture of tall filter?

To convert from one to the other, was the only change you made to replace the filter, cover and "bolt" that runs through the middle? I'm not planning to return mine to what was likely the original configuration, but am curious to know what you did. Thanks.

Filter base is the same for both tall and short. Yes bolt and cover is all needed. Original filter material that came in the tall filters was different than later filters was one reason for change to shorter. Filter material changed also between then and now. Tall to short was made at H serial 121022 in I think October 1942.
