574 stuck engine

I am new to this forum as I usually hang out on the Ford forums, but need some advice on an IH 574. My son is considering buying one that appears in very good condition (tin, tires, paint, etc.), but was (as the story goes!) overhauled a year ago, then left set outside w/no covering & filled w/water & stuck. I have over 60 years of working on engines, so am not afraid of the work involved, but know nothing about this engine. What are the chances of freeing it? Is it a sleeved block? How common is a replacement engine in salvage yards, & what should I expect to pay for one?
I am trying to gather info before we approach the owner w/an offer, so thanks for any help!

If it has had rain water in it there is not a very good chance of freeing it up with out doing a total rebuild. I've freed up many engine that had sat and locked up but only one or 2 that had locked up due to rain water in the cylinders. In the ones I freed up with rain water In them I wicked out the water and then fill the cylinders with a 50/50 mix of turpentine and ATF if diesel and if gas plan ATF

As I understand the story, they put diesel fuel in the cylinders, but I don't know when or how much, then pulled it around some w/no results.

2nd try to post this
If you did not get ALL the water out of the cylinders putting any type of oil be it diesel fuel or ATF if there is so much as a table spoon of water in the cylinders the oil floats on top of the oil and does not good.

As for pulling it and then dumping the clutch that is a good way to break things be it a rod or input shaft or axle

you have 60 years experience , so do the normal and pull the head and go from there. an engine is an engine... sleeves with stuck pistons is the same deal on any engine. in sixty years you must have worked on an engine that has been seized from rain. they are fixable.

Old, I have not seen the tractor, my son is trying to get me a "project", as if I don't have enough!
rustred, I was mostly wondering if it had sleeves. I am sure I could get it apart, but don't know how much of pistons, rods, etc might be left!
Thanks guys! It's largely going to depend on what he can buy it for!

Remove the plugs and look at the walls and if they are rusted nothing will help tear down is then the answer

Yes if you have not seen it yet one has no idea of how good or bad it might be and or what some one else may have done that would cause bigger problems

that tractor with a stuck engine is a 1500.00 unit tops. plus if its as you say filled with water and it froze then very well can be that the sleeves or block is split.
