Question About M / SM

I just picked up a new Farmall M yesterday, and noticed that it has the bent (on purpose....) shifter lever, which I thought was a Super Series thing only, then I got curious and went to look at my SuperM, and it has just a normal one!

So, what tractors came with what?? Thanks!

Your post is missing pictures? Straight shifters on my prewar M?s and the super M and SMTA that have the battery under the seat. Things get changed on old tractors but all of the ?46 thru 52 m?s have had the bent shifter. Did you ever find the number on your power steering motor?

Late Ms had the bent shifter. superM went back to the old straight one.My '52Md has the crooked one,the '53 SM has the straight one.

Also different on some exported tractors. My Farmall M has been on our farm all its life. It has a straight gear lever and cast iron knob threaded onto it. Serial is FBK 2486 X3A.

I 'm curious now are we talking about the long curved one like the hundred series got or just that extra kink in the bottom of the lever instead of the single bend at the bottom. Our 53 H has just one bend at the bottom so it will clear the light tree. Our 50 MD has an extra kink like at the bottom or middle been a while since I have really looked at it. Not the long curved one like the hundred series got. Or was that the 60 series?

When IH made the hydraulic seat a available option to the bent pipe seat the double bend shifter started being used on M and SM until stage 2 SM started then the single bend shifter was used. Stage 2 and up SM wasn't like the H and M single bend though. Battery box under seat models placed the top of shifter more to the left for battery clearance. My leg always wants to rub battery box under seat shifters when in first gear.
