1955 Farmall 300 Utility Steering

My son purchased a 1955 Farmall 300 Utility to mow most of 25 acres that he recently purchased in West Texas. He bought it from a real nice lady who?s husband did some collecting. She said it was running when they parked it.

I brought it home with me because my son doesn?t have the time or a place to work on it.

Believe it or not, the engine runs. However there are some problems that I have to overcome.

The bearing in the top of the steering tube has no balls. Yes, all of the balls in the bearing there are gone. But the bottom most bearing in the bottom of the steering housing has ball bearings but they are really pitted and so is the race. feels like a gravel road, just turning the steering wheel.

I can use some advice about finding or making parts. I have the parts list from CaseIH with numbers but when I search for them, all I find is ?Unavailable?.

Again, help and encouragement is needed.

If it is just bearings you need, take it apart and get a number and manufacturer off the bearing. You should be able to match them up at NAPA or other parts place. If you can read the numbers take them into NAPA and they can order by dementions. They also may be able to order with IH parts numbers.

Ugh, I looked at the parts book and these are not conventional caged ball bearings as I suspected. They're like bicycle pedal crank bearings with separate balls, cup, and cone.

Unfortunately parts for those steering boxes are no longer available from, well, anywhere. It should be simple enough to find a source for 5/16" ball bearing balls, but as far as the cup and cone, you're stuck with what you have.

MAYBE, if you measure the diameter of the shaft and the outer diameter of the bearing cup, you can find a ball bearing at a bearing supply that matches the dimensions. It will need to be a bearing rated for thrust as well as radial load.

You can get the balls from McMasters-Carr, google it. If your races are bad you can try Stauffer salvage (785-966-2739) and they might have a good steering sector or one that might have bearings or just the races that are good enough to get by with.

I had to replace the the balls, seals and the pin that runs in the worm gear on my 300 utility. If you need some help call me 785-760-5262.

Hello: I have some left over parts from a manual steering I had to buy to patch my power steering. It is an older one than mine was and has the loose ball bearings. If you have found yet me know and I will clean them up and send a pic and see if they are the right ones for you. I had to buy the whole box to get the left shaft for mine which was severally chipped!
