Talked to a mechanic who works on tractors in N Indiana. He who knows a man who wants to sell his dad's IH 404 with a cab and loader. His dad bought tractor new. I won't know if tractor is still available until Mechanic gets back to Indiana He is fishing in Florida with my BIL for the next two weeks.

Cab has heat, no Air conditioner.

Has anyone added an AC to a IH 404? What challenges did you run into? Good chance Air conditioners back in the 60's were R12. I have a bottle of R134a. My biggest concern is finding compressor, Pulley and idler, condenser and evaporator, dryer, expansion valve and making lines that will fit the 404.

A/C for cabs back in those days were pretty much all aftermarket, add on units. If you can find an older car or truck with add on, under the dash A/C, just rob all of the components and figure out a way to adapt them to the tractor. Don't forget the condensor that is in front of the radiator.

There have been thousands of AC units retrofitted to older tractors. All/most mFgers offer small cabbed tractors with cabs and AC.I doubt if there is an AC kit for a 404,In fact, yours is the first 404 I ever heard of with a cab.The (cab) MFGer(YAR,Cozy,Hiniker,Full Vision, etc) no doubt offered kits for their particular cab.I'm thinking you will have to get creative.checkout the possibility of a roof mount AC unit from an RV.I have heard they are totally self contained and can use 12 volt. However I have not looked in to them.,I am NOT an AC guy.LOL

Sounds like unless you are going to be using it for a lot of haying, or other hot summer use It would be easier to just run with the windows open.

If height is not a problem I have seen a self contained roof mounted unit used on trucks only other part is the compressor mounted on the engine and driven off the fan belt.

tjy,
That may be an option to think about. I'm thinking it would take a special condenser the same dimensions as the radiator. Then I may need a different fan to move more air. Do you have the compressor? Then I would have to figure out how to add another pulley, make mounting brackets and get special high pressure hoses made.

I plan to use tractor to replace my Jubilee which I use to push snow with in winter and mow lawns in summer. I'm allergic to grass mold, so I want Air conditioning. The weight of the 404 is close to my Jubilee. I have a 6 ft woods finish mower on Jubilee. The 404 should handle mower just fine.

Welcome home George. Some of us southern guys are thinking of a get together April 6. Same day as Elnora swap meet and Sullivan FFA sale. Meet about 4 pm.Let me know what you think. Liliana truck parts and Russ Fisher should have AC you might use.
