Turning up the pump on a 385

Wondering if anybody has any experience turning up the pump on the D155 found in my 385. I’m not looking for much increase in power, maybe 5-10hp at the most.

You do realize that 10HP on a 385 is a 25% increase? That's a HUGE increase on a tractor this size, and unrealistic given that it's naturally aspirated.

Blindly "turning up the pump" on a diesel is risky business. It's best done while the tractor is running on a dynamometer so you can see where the power ends and the smoke begins.

Turning up a naturally aspirated diesel 10% is about the limit before you exceed the capacity of the
cooling system, clutch, pro, etc.
I'd start shopping for a bigger tractor built to make more hp. Might put your 385 on a dyno and make
sure it's making all the hp it should.

I would agree on the turn up, I turned my 6610 10% and it smokes more than works, I would limit it to 5%

If it does not smoke under full load now, you MIGHT gain a bit more power with slightly more fuel. If it does smoke as is now under full load more fuel won't help power, just increase smoke only AND make the fuel man happy..

It might make you happy as well if you're a fan of "rolling coal."

The 485, next tractor up, has the D179 engine and about 50HP. Other than the engine they're identical for all intents and purposes.

Of course another tractor is way more expensive than turning a screw, if you could get away with it.

You can turn the fuel screw up, but I don't know if that will help much on that tractor, they are not a powerhouse. Short stroke D155 engine. Very nice tractor, but it's a 35 PTO HP engine in a much heavier and nicer tractor than most 35 PTO HP tractors.

We had one brand new and traded shortly on a new 485 for power.
