240 govenor

Plowing snow other day with 240 utility. Running wide open throttle. All of a sudden the tractor rpms dropped to idle. Original thought was the throttle
slipped to idle. No such luck. Second thought was the linkage came off the carerator. Doesn?t appear to be the case. Revs up if I manually move the
linkage in front of the carberator. I have never worked inside the govenor but do have a manual. Could I have a broken spring inside the govenor. Any
ideas for me to look at? I appreciate your help.

Likely, your governor spring broke.

Replacing it isn't exactly "rocket surgery" but takes some attention to detail. I'm BEAT and heading for bed, so not gonna type out the long version right now, but you might try GOOGLING IH C123 governor spring replacement.

There's nothing to it. Six bolts, two cotter pins, and the governor housing comes off. No need to remove the radiator, but you might need to remove the side panel on a 240.

Be aware that you need four different wrench configurations to remove the six bolts, AND the bolts are different lengths.

Nothing will *SPROING* out at you when you remove the housing. The weights and distributor drive stay with the engine.

While you are in there replace the thrust bearing in addition to the spring. The thrust bearing isn't cheap but my experience is when the spring goes the thrust bearing isn't far behind. If you choose not to, at least you know how to remove the housing and it will take you half as long the next time.
