560 power steering

is it possible, and wise, to block off the power steering on a 560? leaking at the front and really dont have time right now to fix it.

I should mention the supply fitting to the block in the front is a 3/8 JIC fitting I beleive. I made a hose to test the pressure. Blocking the flow will hurt the pump.

how do i get that unit out of the front bolster? sure it's just the o ring leaking. might have time this week to fix

you ought to get a manual for the steering, lots of parts in there and a bunch of o-rings needed at a minimum.

There are also lines under the radiator that can leak.

In other words is will not be a quick fix.

Just completed R&R of that front power steering unit on a 560. There is a splined universal joint for the steering shaft that can be very stubborn to get off. And expensive to replace if you break it You have to get it off to replace that seal. You might need to make a special puller. It is meant to slide back and forth on the spline to avoid putting pressure on the shaft. I used lots of antisieze on it to reassemble. Avoid removing the steering piston if you can, it has 4 cast iron piston rings on it and when they pass thru the opening to take it apart, it is easy to break them. If you break them IH will probably tell you they are not longer made and to get a used assembly from a salvage yard. I found that the same piston ring is used on 1983 Harley shovel head. Order right from Hastings by bore size and profile, they will fit. Takes 5 hands to reassemble using small screwdrivers and a piston ring compressor to get them started. Good luck with your project.

i think mine is the o ring behind the 4 bolt plate that the steering knuckle hooks too. least thats where it looks like it coming from. are you talking about a seal where the knuckle attaches? something tells me i have to take the entire front end apart to fix mine.

I think you can get the cap off if it the shaft seal, still gotta remove a frame rail.

You have to remove the radiator & support to get to the short lines too.

I don't have pics of my own but found these on the net. If the seal is on the spline shaft is leaking, you might be able to pop it out with a seal puller and install a new one without taking it further apart. If not, then it has to come off the tractor. In the other picture you will see the piston rings that I broke on mine. Two each in one groove on each end.
