Farmall M Hydraulics

I have a 1952 M with belly pump. Last winter I dropped the pump and changed out the main seal by the drive dog. It still leaked a little. When I had
the M hooked up to a Haybuster 77C no-till drill I could only raise the drill for about a half hour of operating time, After the oil got warm it would
not lift it high enough. I am looking into using a pto hydraulic pump with separate tank and control valve this year. Do you think that is my best
option or should I look into a live pump or try to re investigate the belly pump? I think i might need 1500 psi to raise the drill. I can't go to a
bigger cylinder because its the county's drill. Thanks

First, the old M hydraulic pump was designed to function on 30 wt. non detergent motor oil, not hydraulic oil, so that could be your lifting problem. Second, I have rebuilt several of these pumps and have used a speedi sleeve twice to build up the shaft for a new seal. I know exactly what a hassle it is to remove the belly pump, but I would redo it with the sleeve. Ellis

I am in the process of right now,of building a tank to sit, where the battery belongs ,and the battery is going under the seat, but i have had the live pump on their for years, but making it bigger,so it's got the volume for bigger cylinder etc also hope the oil will stay cooler. I am using the belly pump for a reservoir now, i know it sounds foolish for a 68 yr old tractor but it's in perfect shape, got a disk and plow for it.

If you get 750psi from a well used belly pump with Hytran or tractor fluid in it you are lucky. The PTO driven pump is your only real choice. A different possible choice is to use 2 cylinders as a pressure booster. Use a small cylinder just a little longer than the one on the implement, and a second cylinder with a diameter about 50% greater. Attach them on a channel iron facing each other so the bigger is hooked to the M and the smaller to the implement. The size difference makes the pressure. Jim

No,it's not "foolish on a 68 year old tractor".That old tractor will do everything that a newer one will do,probably more reliably too.I have 4 M/SM/400 that all see regular trouble free use.So...I think I'm continueing to use that 'old' tractor for a very long time. The bigger/newer ones just do the heavier seasonal work. The 'old' ones work all year round.Plus, they are all pd for.

If you go to a live pump with the belly pump as a reservoir, remove everything from that belly pump and ventilate it so the return hydraulic fluid doesn't blow all over the tractor. I answered am add for an M live pump for $100. His M was used for mowing the county right of way and that's it. It was a nice M preserved in hydraulic fluid and dirt! And he was only 3 miles away!
