656 diesel fuel tank valve

The valve at the bottom of the fuel tank on a 656 I'm working on has a ball and spring in it. It needs to be replaced but I can't find one online. Can a substitute valve without the check valve work?

Are you looking for the return elbow fitting with the check valve in it 390074R91, or the fuel shutoff valve, 390069R91?

An online search for "IH 390074R91" turns up some dealers that claim to have them, "call for price". (Better be stiing down!)

The shutoff valve, 390069R91 shows to be still available through CIH. (Nearly $100.00 as well!)

Take the ball and spring out and use the elbow as is, engine will run just fine. It's there so the line can be removed from the pump without draining the tank. For years most mechanics just gently bend the line up so the end is above the fuel level when the ball has been removed.

if you are talking about the return line elbow with check valve, i didn't like the price from cnh so did an internet search for a brass 1/4" NPT-m X NPT-f check valve, street el, etc. (this was for a 706, but i imagine would be the same since engine is the same)

for the return line i ended up using a length of brake line with the appropriate adapters.

Thanks for all of your input. I was referring to the shutoff valve and now have a better perspective on the use made of the check valve.
